Whitecaps Confirm Signing of Christian Bolanos

In theory, there is no difference between practice and theory. In practice, there is.  Theoretically, the Whitecaps have added a significant piece to their offensive attack today, coming to terms with Right Winger Christian Bolanos after weeks of speculation. The 31 year old Costa Rican international joins the club from Deportivo Saprissa, where he saw much success, scoring five goals in 13 appearances.

English Transfer Targets

Although Robbo has much love for footballers from South America, it would make sense for the Whitecaps to bring in a domestic player to fill the Right Back position. Here are some potential transfer targets that could be on the radar:

Doneil Henry 22 Canada West Ham

Henry is a regular on the Canadian Men’s National Team, but don’t hold that against him. He is part of a strong and defensively sound back line that will be key to reaching the Hex this year. Although signed to West Ham, he recently went on loan to the Blackburn Rovers, which wrapped up on the 3rd of January. the former product of TFC Academy would fit in nicely in the MLS, but I am sure West Ham would like to keep him in Europe. We can dare to dream.

Eric Lichaj 26 USA Nottingham Forest

Lichaj is liked at his current club, Nottingham Forest. He recently signed a deal that will have him staying with the club until 2017. It is unlikely that he would be open to a loan spell outside of English Football, but the Caps could look to buy him outright.

Jonathan Spector 29 USA Birmingham City

First mentioned by @DowntownBrown_, Spector recently resigned with Birmingham City, but not getting as much playing time as he once was. Spector is probably the most likely target out of English Football for the Whitecaps and has the skill to play in the MLS as a regular starter.

With the Whitecaps pursuing a Right Back replacement so feverishly, do not expect to see a three man back line with any sort of regularity next year. If Robbo does make a formation change, I would expect it to be based out of the 4 – 4 – 2 style, with Laba as the lone defensive back and Russel Teibert rotating out as required.

The next few weeks should see the team sort out its final transfers as the preseason begins in February. It is time to start getting excited!

Draft Day Primers and Where to Find Them

Although not as big as other major sport drafts, the MLS Superdraft is a great way to improve a team. The Whitecaps hold pick number 16 but may look to move up, with expendable assets like Darren Mattocks on the bench and a need for a Right Back.

Here are some great places to get primed and pumped for today’s draft:
